Construction Update - December 2005

Washington Middle School – 3100 Cain Road SE

Washington Middle School Construction Updates

Additions to and modernization of Washington Middle School will increase student capacity from 588 to 800 students. Ten instructional stations will be added and building infrastructure space will be expanded, including school administration, kitchen/serving area, student cafeteria, learning resources center, science facilities, and computer technology facilities. All existing facilities will be modernized. Site improvements include storm water system upgrades, preservation of the east playfield, expansion of staff and visitor parking, and street frontage improvements along Boulevard Road.

Porter Brothers Construction, Edgewood, WA, started major demolition of the existing classrooms, library and administration areas in July. Recycling efforts were greatly achieved during demolition. Reclaimed carpet was removed from all parts of the building and shipped to a carpet mill for recycling. Demolished portions of the building were sorted and recycled where practical. Wood, metal, brick and concrete were all recycled by different vendors in lieu of going into a landfill.

Site work and building construction is well underway, including construction of new storm water facilities, as well as rainwater harvesting hardware, and cistern installation. A significant sustainable strategy implemented on this project is regarding water conservation. This will be done using several different methods. Water will be taken off the new roof areas and “harvested” in a cistern. This rainwater will then be used to flush toilets, instead of sending potable city water down the drain. Dual flush water closets and waterless urinals will also be installed. Students and staff will also work with the City of Olympia on installing a “water wise” garden. Other new landscaping will be native to the northwest and will not require more water or attention than non-native species.

The current Washington student body is off-campus during the construction modernization. The old John Rogers school is being used to house 7th and 8th grade classes. The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is housing of the 6th grade during the 2005 / 2006 school year.

Anticipated construction completion is July 2006.

Capital High School - 2707 Conger Ave. NW

Capital High School Construction Updates

Additions to the 26-year-old building will increase permanent student capacity from 1,389 to 1,680. (Current enrollment is 1,486.) Twelve classrooms are added, including new science and technology labs. The student commons is extended to accommodate all students over two lunch periods. Kitchen and serving space are expanded to accommodate capacity for serving students on campus. Music, art, special education, and storage space are enlarged and modernized. Most original facilities, not yet modernized in Phase I or in previous projects, are upgraded, with an emphasis on improving circulation through the building. A new entry to the visitor and staff parking area to the northeast is created, connecting to a new main corridor leading to the expanded commons area. New skylights are installed throughout the building, with an emphasis on providing daylight into corridors, the commons extension, and classrooms. Access and parking improvements are also included in the project. The proposed bus drop-off north of Pods A and B is currently on hold. Budget permitting, it will be constructed next summer. Track and field upgrades were also included in the 2003 bond, and are being constructed as separate projects.

Construction Update: Berschauer Phillips Construction Company has already completed Phase I of the three-phase project, which primarily consisted of a major addition to the music area, a new life skills area, new classrooms in the pods, and new corridors connecting the pods. Phase II, the new science and art wing, were originally scheduled for completion in February. The science wing is right on schedule. The art wing is almost two months ahead of schedule, with move-in planned for the winter break. Work on Phase III, consisting of the new NE entry addition and major interior modernization/reconstruction, will commence in February and be completed by the start of school in September, 2006.
